Having spread itself around the globe, there are some locations where Pinot Grigio seems to be more at home, or better understood, than elsewhere. The Trentino DOC at the foot of the Italian Alps is definitely on that short list. This wine is produced by the well-regarded Mezzacorona co-operative, where the Castel Firmian label represents the most refined wines of their diverse offer. All fruit is handpicked, with less than ideal grapes being de-classified to more entry-level wines. Traditional vinification is employed for this wine. This includes brief skin contact to increase structure and richness. The Castel Firmian Pinot Grigio tends to have an attractive mid-weight straw yellow colour on release. The aromas are quite distinct, with clear notes of white fleshed fruit blended with those of chamomile and herbs. The flavours follow the nose, with reasonably full body and good fruit weight followed by a dry and balanced, long aftertaste, all framed by a measured, delicate acidity.
