Producers Notes

The 2011 Marlborough Growing Season

Marlborough has had another excellent growing season with dry conditions for most of the harvest. A warm November and December set up good flowering and fruit set, and until mid February the season was tracking much earlier than the long term average. Cooler weather over late February through till the end of harvest slowed the season up, but this is seen as very positive in terms of retaining natural acidity in the wines, and in building intensity of flavour. Although rain was experienced in late April, this had little effect on the vintage as most of the fruit had already been harvested.

Soil Type

The Stoneleigh Vineyard sites are located on the northern side of the Wairau Valley in close proximity to the mighty Wairau River. Often referred to as the Rapaura Series of soils, they are characterised as young soils, based on river silts and stones. They tend to be low in nutrients and have poor water-holding capacity.

Clonal/Rootstock Selection

Clonally, this Sauvignon Blanc is mainly mass selected on a mix of five main rootstocks, these being SO4, 3309, 101/14, RG and Schwarzmann.

Winemaking Details

The grapes were harvested from mid March through until mid April 2011. Most of the grapes harvested were crushed to bag presses or 'tippy tanks'. The juice was drained and pressed from the skins to minimise excessive phenolic extraction. After settling to remove solids, the bright clear juice was racked to ferment. The juice was fermented slowly using selected aromatic yeast at cool temperatures to retain the very distinctive regional and varietal characters.

Oak Regime

Aroma and Palate

The wine is light straw in colour with subtle green highlights. This wine displays lifted passionfruit and white-fleshed nectarine aromatics, with grapefruit and subtle sweaty notes. The palate shows balance, with ripe passionfruit flavours and complex minerality bala nced by a tight, fresh acidity. This is a vibrant and lively wine.

Cellaring and Food Matching

This wine is best enjoyed whilst it is young and exuberant. Serve slightly chilled on its own or with delicate white meat or seafood dishes.
