Producers Notes

Marlborough is New Zealand's most acclaimed winemaking region. With its unique combination of infertile and free-draining stony soils, high annual sunshine hours and a crisp coastal climate, Marlborough has a world-renowned terroir and microclimate.

Situated in the heart of this region, the Stoneleigh vineyards are covered with smooth 'sunstones' that reflect heat to speed the ripening process by day, while cool nights maintain intense fruit flavours. The result is the stunning range of uniquely Marlborough wines from Stoneleigh.

The winemaker has harvested the fruit at peak intensity looking for both fresh and ripe fruit properties. By minimising winemaking intervention, the wine is able to express perfectly its unique origin. This Stoneleigh Pinot Gris has a complex, warm richness with subtle fruit aromas of rich, fresh pear and tropical fruits. The palate is full bodied and rich with long, lingering flavours that layer the palate with a lasting and complex oiliness.

The 2011 growing season: Marlborough has had another excellent growing season with dry conditions for most of the harvest. A warm November and December set up good flowering and fruit set, and until mid February the season was tracking much earlier than the long term average. Cooler weather over late February through till the end of harvest, slowed the season up, but this is seen as very positive in terms of retaining natural acidity in the wines, and in building intensity of flavour. Although rain was experienced in late April, this had little effect on the vintage as most of the fruit had already been harvested.

Soil Type

The Stoneleigh vineyard sites are located on the northern side of the Wairau valley in close proximity to the mighty Wairau River. Often referred to as the 'Rapaura Series' of soils, they are characterised as young soils, based on river silts and stones. They tend to be low in nutrients and have poor water-holding capacity. A key feature is the preponderance of smooth sunstones that reflect the sun's heat onto the grapes, enhancing ripening.

Winemaking Details

Once a desired concentration was reached and berry shrivel had just begun, the grapes were harvested. All the grapes were crushed to a bag press and the juice was drained and pressed from skins to minimise excessive phenolic extraction, before it was settled to remove solids. The juice was then fermented slowly using selected aromatic yeast at cool temperatures to retain the very distinctive regional and varietal characters.

Aroma and Palate

The wine has rich, straw colours with some subtle green highlights. The nose is complex, warm and rich with fresh pear and subtle spicy aromas. The full-bodied and rich palate has lingering tropical fruit flavours of melons, mangoes and apple strudel with a hint of ginger spice coupled with a lasting, complex oiliness and a lime zest finish.

Cellaring and Food Matching

This wine is best enjoyed young or could be cellared over the next two years if bottle development characters are desired. Serve slightly chilled on its own or with delicate white meat, pasta or seafood dishes. This is an excellent aperitif.
